River Safety

RIVER SAFETY

Save the River-Save the Hills has examined the situation on weekends, and has determined the following:  Excessive speed and wakes are causing damage to docks and erosion to beaches and river banks.
  • Personal watercraft are appearing in greater numbers on the river. While the majority of operators observe Connecticut State DEEP regulations (Boater's Guide) for operation, a significant number of operators exceed speed limit (6 MPH) within the 200 feet boundary from shore and moored or anchored vessels. The increased popularity of kayaks means a greater chance of serious accidents. Several members have expressed concern about safety on the river. The main problem seems to be small and medium sized (including personal) watercraft speeding through anchorage areas and close to docks.
We would like to see everyone enjoy the River safely. If you "See Something, Say Something" by calling the Harbor Master, David Crocker at 860-442-5994. Try to give the name of the boat or the CT registration number if you can, as well as a description of the vessel. Click Here for the website for the Harbor Management Commission.

Please remember to wear your lifejackets and adhere to local and CT State boating laws while you share our beautiful Niantic River with others!
