RIVER POLLUTION
We applaud the town of East Lyme in their success in sewering the Pine Grove area with the Pine Grove Sewer Project! We would love to see Saunders Point follow this positive change for the health of the River and get sewers installed as well.
We also advocate for stormwater mitigation and treatment. There are proven technologies that can be applied to the storm water sewer outfalls that now empty into the river. These sewer lines are considered point sources of pollution under the Clean Water Act. Most experts agree that storm water runoff through these sewers is the primary source of degradation of coastal and estuarine waters such as the Niantic River.
We believe that storm water is the primary source of man-made pollution in the mix, now that our Pumpout Program is effectively controlling boat-based marine sewerage. We support the Niantic River Watershed Committee's work in testing the areas of the river where these sewer outfalls hit the river to collect data on the amount of pollutants that come into the river this way.
Our next hope is for the towns to follow New London and create a Stormwater District for all of the towns in the Niantic River Watershed.
